For best results, we recommend using Auto-Rx® in motor oil with a mineral oil base. As a general rule, these are called conventional oils, as opposed to synthetics. In North America, mineral oils can be labeled "synthetic" due to more thorough refinement, and they compete with true full synthetic oils with respect to longer life and better cold-weather flow characteristics.
Remember—our directions call for a cleaning phase run of 2500 miles and a rinse phase of 3000 miles—both relatively short oil-change intervals.
For vehicles required to run a synthetic oil to maintain a factory warranty, you should choose from the list above, as these oils perform with the same directions for conventional oils for all applications. Don't waste money on expensive oil designed to run longer intervals. Auto-Rx® generally works best with the least expensive motor oil available.
You may have noticed that the most famous full-synthetic oil (a PAO-base) is not on the approved list. This is because PAO-base oils do not accept additives readily—they need coupling esters to hold the additive package in suspension. These coupling esters compete for the same space on metal surfaces as do the cleaning esters of Auto-Rx, which slows down the cleaning action and takes longer. Also, the PAO oils are not a good choice in the rinse phase because those coupling esters make the oil cling to metal, which interferes with Auto-Rx® rinsing clean the metal surfaces.
- If you choose to run Auto-Rx® in a full synthetic PAO-base oil, such as Mobil 1, you must increase the cleaning phase mileage to 4000 miles.
- Conventional oil must be used.
- For best results, run conventional or approved synthetics..

CONVENTIONAL OIL: These oils are common, mineral-based motor oils currently available on the market. They have fair to good performance in lubricating properties such as volatility, oxidative stability, and flash/fire points. They have only fair performance in areas such as pour point, cold crank viscosity, and extreme pressure wear. |
| Group III |
ULTRA-REFINED CONVENTIONAL OIL SOLD AS SYNTHETIC OIL IN NORTH AMERICA ONLY: Made through hydroprocessing and refining, these oils are subjected to the highest level of mineral oil refining. They offer good performance in a wide range of attributes, as well as good molecular uniformity and stability. They are commonly mixed with additives and marketed as synthetic or semi-synthetic products. These oils have become more common in North America during the past decade. |
| Group IV |
PAO-BASE OIL (MOBIL 1, PENNZOIL ULTRA): We do not recommend using Auto-Rx® with full synthetic oils, because full synthetics normally contain coupling esters that allow the oil manufacturer to add its additive package into the PAO (polyalkylolefin base). These coupling esters interfere with cleaning esters of Auto-Rx®. They compete for surface space on metal surfaces. In situations where you prefer to run Mobil 1 or similar full synthetic oil, we recommend extending the cleaning cycle from 3000 miles up to 4000 miles. There is incompatability between Auto-Rx® and these PAO-base oils, and the effectiveness of Auto-Rx® is reduced as compared to running Auto-Rx® in conventional or mineral oils labeled as synthetics. |
